The agreement also secures the employment status of 12 contract doctors, who will be converted to Permanent and Pensionable terms by March 31, 2026.

A potential strike by doctors in Trans Nzoia County has been averted following an agreement between the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) and the county government.

The deal, reached after weeks of negotiations, outlines promotions, conversion of contract doctors, and continuity of medical cover, with clear timelines for implementation.

The agreement was reached after KMPDU raised concerns over doctors’ welfare and employment terms. Negotiations were led on behalf of the county by H.E. George Natembeya on Thursday, culminating in a framework designed to address both promotions and employment security.

“We are pleased to confirm that an agreement has been reached on the following,” the union said in a statement.

Under the new framework, 22 doctors in Job Group N will be promoted to Job Group P by March 17, 2026. Doctors in Job Group P set for promotion to Q, who have already been interviewed, will also advance within the same month.

Pending promotions for doctors in Job Groups Q, R, and S are expected to be completed within 90 days from February 17, 2026, with all promotions including corresponding financial adjustments.

The agreement also secures the employment status of 12 contract doctors, who will be converted to Permanent and Pensionable terms by March 31, 2026.

On medical coverage, the union confirmed, “the current medical cover remains valid,” adding that a new comprehensive insurance plan will be procured before the current one expires to guarantee uninterrupted access to care.

KMPDU described the outcome as a product of dialogue and collaboration, stating, “This agreement reflects unity, resolve, and structured engagement.” The union also pledged to “monitor implementation to ensure full compliance with the agreed timelines.”

The resolution comes after a strike notice issued in February had raised fears of service disruptions across the county’s health facilities. With the agreement now in place, the immediate focus will shift to meeting the scheduled deadlines, starting with the March promotions and contract conversions.

The pending promotions for higher job groups will be completed within the 90-day window starting February 17, 2026. The union’s commitment to monitoring indicates ongoing engagement to ensure that both parties fulfill the agreed terms.

In closing, KMPDU reiterated its core principles, stating, “Dignity for doctors. Accountability in leadership. Service to the people.” The deal is expected to ease tensions between healthcare workers and the county government, providing a clear roadmap for staffing reforms and improvements in doctors’ welfare.
